Last September, in honor of the 25th anniversary of Fendi’s baguette bag, the Italian brand decided to mix things up with a runway show in New York City. Featuring surprise guest collaborations by the likes of Marc Jacobs and Tiffany & Co. (two names with big New York footprints), the collection combined uptown and downtown sensibilities by taking the Italian design house’s signature codes and reinventing them for a new generation of fans. And today, Fendi by Marc Jacobs is finally available to buy, both online and in select Fendi stores.
Featuring a mix of ready-to-wear, bags, shoes, jewelry, sunglasses, and of course, those memorable floppy furry hats from the runway, the pieces draw from New York’s Gilded Age as well the idea that everyday items can be a part of the mythology of the city as well. You’ll see that the palette reflects this inspiration with shades of silver, gray, white, and black punctuated with fluorescent yellow. Jacobs also drew upon casual silhouettes like denim, utility details, as well as oversized cotton t-shirts as well as reinterpreting the Fendi logo — you’ll find in repeating all over the sheer knits.
But being that this is a celebration of the baguette, of course that’s the centerpiece. Not only was the signature style present on hoodies as well as on cargo pants, there are special bags as well. They range in size from the maxi all the way down to sizes described as “phone” and “nano”. Jacobs’ sense of humor is also evident — certain styles literally have the words “The Baguette” on them, in the same font he uses for his own brand’s totes. And for those looking for logo-fied styles, you’ll find versions on bleached denim as well as crystal covered styles, befit for a modern day Carrie from Sex and the City.
