“I love the idea of creating a character with makeup,” says Peter Philips, the Dior makeup maestro known for his out-of-the-box creative flair and painterly eye. “You can play dress-up and make yourself up into anyone you want to be.” In these pages, we meet a coterie of mystery women – extravagant mother figures and their glamorous younger counterparts – taking the autumn makeup launches from Dior out for a spin. Not knowing who they are or what they’re up to is part of the fun: “I was thinking they could be characters from an Agatha Christie movie or a weird Netflix series,” Philips says. “I just let my brush be guided by their faces.” The Diorshow 5 Couleurs Lucky Clover eyeshadow palettes – Charmed Green, a quintet of verdant shades, and Lucky Rosewood, comprised of burgundy, taupe, and pink shades – provided Philips with a playground of choose-your-own adventure colors for lids. “When you have a five-color palette, people forget that each shade can be used on its own,” he says. “I used only the chartreuse for some of these looks, and it gives this sick, chemical, 1960s eyeshadow effect. Then I used the full palette to create a metallic green smoky eye that’s more like Studio 54 glam.” He pushed the Rosewood shades to extremes, too, blending the luminous shimmer and satin-finish pinks with the intense, reddish burgundy. “I especially love the way it came together with the red, messy lip on the woman wearing the pearls,” he says. “She looks like she spends every evening in a bar or a casino. You can imagine her as this eccentric woman, constantly with a cocktail and a cigarette in hand.”

The latest Rouge Dior lineup, which includes two new long-wear matte formulations, gave Philips a versatile toolkit for lip embellishment, which he took from velvety crimson to high-shine plum. “With the new liquid On Stage Ink Blur, you can do just a one-layer application for a blurry, cloud-like lip, or you can build it up in layers to create an intense, plush color.” Sometimes, he says, he simply taps it on with a finger, like a laissez-faire stain; or it can be applied with statement-making intent, imparting a highly pigmented soft finish color that will last for hours.

As for cheeks? These days, Philips contends, the bolder the better. “People are embracing blush right now,” he says. “It’s the next generation after contouring and highlighter.” He combined creams and powders to build up the flushed pinks and fuchsias in this cinematic story, often layering a reflective, glass-skin Dior Backstage Rosy Glow stick with a pH-reactive Rosy Glow powder to heighten the intensity. “What I like to do is apply a little foundation to the skin, then blush, blending it only a little bit so you still have a strong color. After that, I’ll go over it again with a bit of foundation left over on my sponge, and it just merges with the skin. It almost looks like you woke up like that.” Philips relished the opportunity to test drive the full array of Dior makeup on so many faces, with a wide diversity of skin tones and ages. “It’s amazing to see them next to each other,” he says, “the beauty of youth and the power of age. I didn’t want to be too precious with anything. If it’s a bit off balance, it doesn’t matter because it adds to the character.”

In the end, Philips says, the overarching theme is that you can use makeup to tell any story you like. “It’s not about a specific trend. It’s about having fun with makeup. Don’t feel that you have boundaries. You can go very subtle, you can go very chic, you can go glam. You can apply color with your finger, or use the most expensive blush. That’s a beautiful message to send out into the world: you’re free to do whatever you want to do.”
