Blackpink’s Jennie, Lily Rose Depp, and more star highlight the possibilities of the Chanel 22 mini bag.
What does it mean to live out your dreams? Or maybe exist as other people’s dreams? That’s what Chanel explores in their latest ad campaign for their Chanel 22 bag, which is now available in a mini size. Featuring four faces of the brand: Lily Rose Depp, Whitney Peak, Blackpink’s Jennie, and Margaret Qualley, the Inez and Vinoodh directed films and images take place everywhere from Seoul to Los Angeles to New York to Montant. Highlighting the dualities that can exist in every woman, albeit one that’s stylishly dressed in head-to-toe Chanel complete with bag in hand, the short clips show how fantasy and reality intersect in playful ways.
For Blackpink’s Jennie, that means showcasing opposing facets of her personality. Shot in a traditional Korean house as well as other locations across the city including an underground photo booth and a skyscraper, her voiceover begins with the words, “We all have that one friend. You know, the fun one, the wild one.” As the video progresses with its fairy tale-like setting, Jennie shows that this “friend” is actually her, a contrast from her pop-star persona that we’re all familiar with.
Continuing the themes of complexities and nuance, Inez and Vinoodh asked actress Lily Rose Depp to play into the femme fatale cliche. While talking about herself in the third person, Depp showcases her sense of humor. “The idea of identity and finding where you belong was very much at the center of her story. She takes herself quite seriously and at the same time is able to make fun of herself,” says the duo in a press release.
Like Depp, Margaret Qualley also grew up with a famous family, and for her campaign, Inez and Vinoodh decided to focus on her childhood growing up in Montana, away from the spotlight. Spliced with images of city life, the short film highlights Qualley’s method of finding calm despite a hectic life by living in nature and getting in a few cuddles with her horse.
To round out the films, actress Whitney Peak takes viewers along a version of what a fun night out with friends in New York City would look like. From skipping after parties in favor of wandering around Brooklyn to getting late night food from a Venezuelan food truck, it’s a lighthearted look at how friendships can help define a person.
