Though she lives in New York, Rachel Scott is forever moored to her upbringing in the Caribbean. With each passing season, she digs a bit deeper into her ancestry and identity. For SS27, Scott studied the Caribbean Sea and its ever-changing colours, the way it can both unite and separate, and the churning of the past and present.
Scott does not do anything halfheartedly, and like the sea, some of the pieces were quite bold. The opening look featured a blue organza dress with crocheted side panels and a silver vintage napkin-ring shoulder accent, worn over mossy-coloured trousers. Dense organza was a recurring theme – it appeared on skirts, crop tops, jackets, and on the bottom half of trench coats. For those not ready to embrace the rollicking waves of organza, there were silk ruffled dresses cascaded down the body and suits with asymmetric peplum silhouettes. Elsewhere, colonial-era-inspired pieces included a high-necked olive green overcoat that grazed above the knee. A mauve crocheted top-and-skirt combo was classic Diotima and a welcome breath of fresh air.
Scott launched her label only five years ago, but is already a CFDA Award winner and an industry favorite. Seasoned vets like Narciso Rodriguez, Maria Cornejo, and Andre Walker came out to support her show. As if anchored to the ocean floor, the love for Scott runs deep.
