Anthony Vaccarello has invited Beijing-based photographer Lin Zhipeng – better known as No.223 – to display his poignant works at a new, inimitable exhibition at the Saint Laurent Rive Droite stores in Paris and Los Angeles. Delving into No.223’s intimate memories of loved ones across China, Tibet, Southeast Asia, Japan and Europe, the boutiques will present the works Skin in the Orange, 2018; A Fish Wish, 2019; Red Symbol, 2019; and Water Ghosts, 2016; from which a selection will be available for purchase. There will also be an experimental fanzine on sale if you’re looking to bring a taste of his candid works home.
No.223 embraces the Hong Kong director’s poetic and dreamy atmosphere in his work, also channeling the solitude and mystery of Kar-Wai’s many characters. His No.223 moniker, too, is inspired by the police character in Wong Kar-Wai’s Chungking Express, a 1994 romantic crime comedy-drama movie about two melancholy policemen who fall in love. Through his photographs, Zhipeng’s counteracts an often conservative Chinese cultural context. They depict youths indulging in love and life, as they oscillate between jubilation and deep melancholy, playful sexuality and often the simple human need to be loved.
