THE NEW MAKERS: LIZZY KOURY

Meet the baker who rides high with her unique brand of talent, style, and ingenuity.

It’s a tough time to be a rebel. There’s not a lot we haven’t seen, and anything we might wish to see, or dream up, is less than a click away. What’s an iconoclast to do? Making something is a good start. Real things, not just content, can exist in the world, turning heads and changing minds. These 10 creatives—all in Chanel Fine Jewelry for this portfolio—might not have permanent solutions, but they are just getting going. What they’ve accomplished so far sets them apart and raises the bar for what’s next.

Lizzy Koury is a bad bitch. Literally. That’s the name of a scholarship she received that was supplied by three women in the food and beverage industry in Charleston, where she attended college. The money helped fund Koury’s culinary school tuition and, perhaps, sent her on a path of DNGAF self-sufficiency that allowed her to open Loser’s Eating House, a made-to-order bakery with whimsical cakes, whose fans include Martha Stewart (“We have the same caviar dealer”), Pete Davidson, and Action Bronson. Koury first dabbled in art, but it was only after working in a gallery that she realized, “Food is my medium.”

Loser’s (the moniker is a joke that stuck) evolved from a dinner club to pop-ups at chic nightspots like Time Again and Jean’s, and then to her cake catering, where her creations’ singularity—they’re rich, colorful, and whimsical, but not intricate, gilded, or delicate—could shine through. Everything about Koury’s baked goods is indulgent, including ingredients like house-made vanilla extract and European butter. Recently, Loser’s added cinnamon buns to its offerings. “My love language is food,” she says. “Obviously, it’s a cake. It’s not gonna be good for you, but I want it to be nutritionally dense and nourishing.”

Koury fields orders from a ghost kitchen in SoHo and sells out every week— those who miss out tend to yell at her in her DMs or sometimes in person. “They’re one of one,” she says of her confections. “I think that’s what people like. And if they don’t, they should get lost.”
