The photographer’s new book Behind the Scenes captures some notable names.
What do celebrities look like when they’re caught off-guard? Through Sofia Malamute’s camera, they appear to live, laugh, and love just like the rest of us. The Argentinian photographer just launched her first book Behind the Scene back in early September. Serving as an ode to her personal journey lurking behind fashion’s most intimate circle, Malamute’s access offers a perspective that few get to see. Inside, you will find familiar faces like Suki Waterhouse, Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, Kaia Gerber, Rihanna and even the late Karl Lagerfeld with whom Malamute has worked for 2 years managing the images for Chanel’s Instagram. “I like glamorous people, so glam is always around,” said the photographer. Spanning from 2013 to 2019, the 416-page book offers a glimpse into some of the most authentic moments in celebrity culture. We sat down with her and asked 10 questions while she signed the book at London’s Dover Street Market.
1)) Can you tell us about Behind the Scene? What’s in it?
It’s my first book which has a lot of pictures in it. All materials are in chronological order from 2013 to 2019.
2) How did you curate the book?
I worked alongside a very good friend from Argentina, Cecilia Glik, to piece the edit together against a record-breaking deadline.
3) How did you start your career as a photographer?
It started when I was very young — I was actually 15 years old. I was working behind the scenes so …pretty much what I’m doing right now.
4) Can you tell us a bit about your experience working at Chanel?
It was back in 2014 when we started [Instagram] so it’s like right in during the app’s boom. Social media was a new thing, so you just take your pictures as you want. We would post them on a private account and the marketing editors picked from those ones [for the official account]. I used to carry two iPhones all the time just to get the job done! But the experience was really fun and I got to meet amazing people and go to amazing places.
5) Your pictures are always so real yet so glamorous. How did you achieve that?
I guess I like to hang out with glamorous people and I like going to glamorous places so everything ended up being glamorous.
6) What’s that image that changed your perspective on photography if any?
The cover of Nan Goldin’s The Ballad of Sexual Dependency. That orange picture really changed my perspective on photography.
7) Is there anything outside photography you’d like to experiment?
I’ve been actually working on music and it’s coming out soon.
8) Can you describe your personal style?
I’m into the corporate mood right now since I just released my first book. I like to follow my intuition, so whatever feels comfortable.
9) What’s the TikTok trend that you’re currently obsessed with?
I’m not sure if it’s a trend but I’m quite obsessed with crime scene clean-up. I was quite into the cleaning ASMR thing but it’s not a trend anymore.
10) Last question, what’s your favorite filter?
It’s always the Paris filter on Instagram.
