Sabato De Sarno’s arrival at Gucci marked a clean slate for the Italian fashion behemoth. The end of one glistening era and the glorious beginning of another, the designer’s debut collection for the house shaped up to be quite the step change. A palate cleanser from the eclectic and eccentric fashion that defined Alessandro Michele’s seven-year run as creative director, De Sarno instead directed his focus on the defining components that make up our wardrobes. The neatly tailored blazer and go-to denim, for instance, and abbreviated A-line dresses and slick pencil skirts in shiny leather. Barely there short-shorts, platform loafers and statement outerwear came infused with youthful attitude, while fresh iterations of house classics – including a crystalized rendition of the Jackie bag – will undoubtedly win over the loyalists. This is the refresh. Welcome to the new Gucci.
