BREAKING: Olivier Rousteing Is Rabanne’s Next Creative Director

This morning, Olivier Rousteing was officially named creative director of Rabanne, marking a decisive new chapter for the storied maison following the departure of Julien Dossena in June who has held the position since 2013. Now, one of fashion’s most visible and culturally attuned creative forces takes the reins.

“Joining Rabanne is a tremendous honor. This is a house that has always challenged convention, transforming bold ideas into creations that have shaped fashion history. Its spirit of innovation, craftsmanship, and fearless creativity has inspired generations, and today it inspires me,” Rousteing said in a statement.

Rousteing is best known for his 14-year tenure at Balmain, where he transformed the historic French label into a global pop-cultural powerhouse. Appointed creative director at just 25, he quickly recalibrated Balmain’s heritage of Parisian opulence for a new generation. Razor-sharp shoulders, corseted waists, intricate beadwork and unapologetic glamour became his signatures, restoring the house’s couture-level craftsmanship while amplifying its sex appeal.

Alongside designing clothes, he built a movement. The Balmain Army, as it came to be known, was a tight-knit collective of models, musicians and cultural figures who embodied the house’s high-voltage confidence. Early champions such as Rihanna and Beyoncé cemented the brand’s red-carpet authority, while close relationships with Kim Kardashian and Kanye propelled it into the social media stratosphere. Rousteing understood instinctively that fashion’s FROW had moved online, and he embraced the shift with unprecedented transparency, turning Instagram into both moodboard and megaphone.

Commercially, his impact was equally seismic. The sold-out 2015 collaboration with H&M proved that luxury-meets-mass could be executed without diluting brand identity, while expanding Balmain’s reach to a younger, global customer. Under his leadership, the house grew into a multi-category empire spanning womenswear, menswear, accessories and fragrance. Even moments of crisis – including the devastating atelier fire just weeks before a Paris Fashion Week show – were met with candor and resolve, reinforcing his reputation as a resilient, modern leader.

If Balmain under Rousteing was about spectacle and power, Rabanne has long been defined by innovation, irreverence and a futuristic spirit. Founded by Paco Rabanne, the house built its reputation on unconventional materials, boundary-pushing construction and a vision of fashion that looked relentlessly toward the future. Under Dossena, those foundations were reinterpreted for a new era through fluid silhouettes, experimental textures and an instinctive understanding of contemporary dressing. His work preserved the house’s pioneering energy while making it feel accessible, desirable and culturally relevant.

Rousteing’s arrival signals an evolution. His mastery of celebrity culture, image-making and digital storytelling has the potential to propel Rabanne’s futuristic legacy onto an even larger global stage. While the house already enjoys strong cultural relevance, Rousteing brings a proven ability to turn fashion into a broader cultural conversation, introducing Rabanne’s distinctive codes to new audiences while building on the momentum established under Dossena.

“Olivier Rousteing’s creative vision is bold, magnetic, and deeply connected to the energy of today. His unique ability to create fashion that celebrates confidence and self-expression makes him a natural choice for Rabanne. With Olivier, we are opening a new chapter for the house.”

With Rousteing at the helm, Rabanne turns the page with intention. Rousteing will present his debut collection for the house in March at Paris Fashion Week for AW27.
