Mrs Prada had a big idea for Miu Miu. After seeing everybody around her dressing in sportswear, she wanted to “lift up the sportswear to a different elegance, bring elegance to sports,” she said backstage.
Retro swim bottoms were worn on their own with sporty crop tops and blazers. They also peeked out under the waistbands of side-stripe sweat pants or box-pleated check skirts and kilts – the ladylike, knee-length kind that are core to Mrs Prada’s style.
Scan down to the feet and many models, including Gigi Hadid and actor Jamie Bell, whizzed by in trainers from Miu Miu’s collaboration with New Balance (added quirk: laced down to the toe). It wasn’t the only collaboration. Wrangler got the Miu Miu treatment too. Heritage denim pieces from the late nineties, sourced by vintage specialists, were upcycled by the Miu Miu atelier and fastened with the cross lacing (a motif that appeared throughout the collection) at the front. Cameos from Bell, Olivia Colman, Emma Corrin, Noah Jupe, Chandler Kinney, Donkey Kid and Louisa Jacobson, brought buzz.
Jeans, trainers, sportswear with classic tailoring or a dash of crystal embellishment and an ugly ’70s print thrown in? Miu Miu’s formula was ultra-relatable but presented with quirk and energy. One babydoll party dress looked like a swimsuit from the top before bursting into crystal embellished satin. Going out out? How about wearing your crystal embellished bra top over your sporty tee and track top. Job done.
Elevated reality is a recurring theme this season as designers seek to hack everyday dress codes. Miu Miu is Mrs Prada’s take on how we all dress.
