Sarah Burton is off to Givenchy!
The acclaimed British talent, who spent 13 years as the creative director of Alexander McQueen, becomes the maison’s eighth designer and second woman to helm the couture house.
“It is a great honour to be joining the beautiful house of Givenchy, it is a jewel,” said Burton in a statement. “I am so excited to be able to write the next chapter in the story of this iconic house and to bring to Givenchy my own vision, sensibility and beliefs.”
Set to oversee both the womenswear and menswear arms of the house, alongside couture, Burton will stage her first collection in March 2025 during Paris Fashion Week.
“The arrival of Sarah Burton as head of our creative design is a very exciting moment for Givenchy,” said Alessandro Valenti, Givenchy’s new CEO, who joins the brand from Louis Vuitton. “Her remarkable career path and creative vision have already won her a vast fan base, and we are certain that under her direction, Givenchy will continue to innovate and captivate an extensive audience across the world stage.”
Burton worked at Alexander McQueen for 26 years, joining the house in 1997, before becoming head of womenswear in 2000. She worked closely alongside Lee Alexander McQueen and completed the designer’s final collection a month following his tragic suicide in 2010.
Building on the house’s legacy, her collections were both magnificent and serene, each deeply rooted in British craft of the highest order. Powerfully romantic, her distinct design lexicon steered the house with a graceful confidence that has propelled Alexander McQueen to terrific, new heights. One of her most notable achievements was designing the wedding dress of Catherine, Princess of Wales in 2011.
Burton follows in the footsteps of her late mentor, Lee McQueen, who was Givenchy’s creative director from 1996-2001. We are ecstatic to see what direction she’ll take the house in.
