After tapping a cast of friends and family for their spring 2024 collection, Balenciaga decided to veer into a more sustainable direction for fall 2024. Partnering with eBay, the two upcycled pieces from the site into looks for the show. From eBay logo T-shirts to resin-aged faux-fur coats to the brand’s now signature slouchy, deconstructed tailoring, Demna Gvasalia found innovative ways to transform what was once old into decidedly modern silhouettes. And now the brand is offering a peek into how these designs came to be with two behind-the-scenes short films that show the techniques used to craft these garments.
In the first video, we see how fabric is both static and in movement, as Demna finds innovative ways to play with materiality. One would not usually turn to resin to fashion together organic pleats but Balenciaga clearly uses it to their advantage. This one of a kind process starts by bunching up silk and spraying it with water. Once the windswept shape is created, resin is used to preserve each pleat making each garment look as if it is perpetually in motion — perfect for looking like you are sauntering down a runway at all times.
At first when looking at the pieces seen in the second video the concept of play and makeshift immediately springs to mind as pieces of tape are haphazardly wrapped around the models body. However, this BTS video runs us through the intentionality behind using the adhesive. You’ll see how each piece is strategically placed to create different patchworks ultimately resulting in the look. Curious to see more?
