Debbie Harry and Kelsey Lu Talk Fashion, Music, and Gucci

The two celebrated their campaign We Will Always Have London with an intimate dinner last night in New York City.

Music and clothes, while seemingly disparate, share a commonality: they can hold powerful memories. The right song or a favorite dress can instantly transport a person to a point in time. Case in point: Gucci’s latest campaign. Titled We Will Always Have London and shot by Nan Goldin, the images and video star Debbie Harry and Kelsey Lu along with a cast of models to spotlight the brand’s Blondie bag. Harry’s iconic Heart of Glass serves as the soundtrack, albeit as a reimagined string arrangement that features Lu playing the cello. It’s equal parts haunting and nostalgic, tying together songs and outfits to a particular period in one’s life. And for Lu, that interconnection extends to beyond her work on the ad shoot. “One of my favorite fashion moments was getting to meet Debbie at the Gucci show. The experience was amazing also because two nights before, I spontaneously recorded with Mark Ronson in the studio. It was just for fun but then as I was sitting there, I heard my music playing. It was a pinch me moment,” she said last night over an intimate dinner at Manuela.

The soon-to-be opened restaurant, owned by the same couple behind Hauser + Wirth, played host to Lu and Harry as well as a bevy of Gucci clad editors and friends of the brand last night in honor of the campaign. Harry, clad in a sheer black blouse that called back to one of the images, was quick to embrace Lu, who wore a gray suit. The affection and admiration between the two is evident, with both mentioning how Goldin made the experience that much more pleasant. “We were just getting to know each other and Nan’s work is so sensational,” says Harry. “I’ve known [Nan] for a few years and she makes it so easy for the people she’s shooting. You’re able to be in your body and yourself in the moment,” added Lu. But the rapport goes beyond being co-stars as the two turned to the topic of music. With Lu spending most of her time in the studio, as she’s set to release an album in the next year, she’s been laser focused on her work. Those efforts and talent haven’t gone unnoticed. “I’m excited for Lu’s [upcoming record]. She’s going to have a terrific impact on the future of music,” says Harry. High praise indeed.
