10 Things You Might Have Missed This Week: Art and Beauty Collide

Celine’s first Beauté ads, H&M and Jean-Michel Basquiat link up, and more.

Last week the Olympics kicked off in Paris in a spectacular (albeit extremely soggy) fashion. From Lady Gaga to Céline Dion to Aya Nakamura, the custom Dior looks were one of the highlights and now you can see them in person, at La Galerie Dior. Speaking of Celine, albeit a different one, this week also marks the first images from Hedi Slimane’s foray into color cosmetics for the brand, with Slimane photographing and directing actress Ever Anderson. Also happening this week? Art collaborations galore ranging from H&M’s ode to Jean-Michel Basquiat to Homme Plissé Issey Miyake’s creative session with Ronan Bouroullec, to get you inspired.

Read on to learn more and catch up on what else you might have missed.

H&M’s Latest Collaboration Celebrates Jean-Michel Basquiat

No artist is more synonymous with New York during the 80s than Jean-Michel Basquiat and he serves as the basis for H&M latest collaboration. In partnership with designers Ev Bravado and Téla D’Amore, the 30-piece collection is the merging of Black creatives new and old. Combining Basquiat’s iconic imagery with the duo’s signature stained glass motifs, the styles hit stores this week and include everything from tailoring to jackets to hoodies to a corset. Key pieces include a bomber jacket featuring Ass Killer, 1984 as well as black blazer that reference Untitled (ideal), 1988 and Untitled (World Famous, 1983. “For us, Basquiat has always been an influential and larger than life figure. To be able to comb through his archives and select rarely referenced artworks is a blessing,” says the two via press release.

You Can See Dior’s Opening Ceremony Looks in Person

Arguably no one had a bigger night, fashion-wise, than Dior at the Olympic Opening Ceremonies. There was Lady Gaga, in a black corset and pink feathers for her rendition of Zizi Jeanmaire’s Mon Truc en Plumes while Aya Nakamura’s gold haute couture design featured hand sewn plumes by one by the artisans of Maison Lemarié. Mezzo-soprano Axelle Saint-Cirel’s draped design recalled the French flag, a fitting look while performing La Marseillaise. And finally, there was the spectacular return of Céline Dion, clad in a white sequin and pearl gown, closing the evening atop the Eiffel Tower with her version of Edith Piaf’s L’Hymne à l’Amour. Now, you can see all these creations in person, as they’ll be on display at La Galerie Dior as of this week. Scattered throughout the museum’s rooms, they highlight the best of the maison’s petit mains. Even if you’ve been to the space before, it’s worth a repeat visit to visit these one-of-a-kind creations in all of their spectacular glory.

Dolce & Gabbana Takes Over Gurney’s

What is summer without a colorful Dolce & Gabbana takeover? While the brand is best known for their pop-ups along the Mediterranean shore, this summer they’re headed out east. Dolce & Gabbana is bringing their iconic style to Gurney’s Montauk Resort & Seawater Spa. The hotel is decked out in their Blu Mediterraneo decor, covering the beach club and lounge. Plus, there’s also a retail experience, featuring vacation ready clothing and accessories for the ultimate Italian experience.

Celine Beauté Releases Their First Campaign Images

Back in March Hedi Slimane introduced Celine Beauté, marking the first time the brand expanded into color cosmetics and now we have images of the brand’s Les Grande Classiques Beauté. Like the name implies, these are the first products to launch and serve as the foundation for your makeup collection. Consisting of the Rouge Triomphe lipstick you’ll also find lipstick, blush, and Kabuki brushes. Shot and directed by Slimane, the campaign stars actress Ever Anderson in a short film and also includes stylized photos of the pieces. Sleek and elegant, they drop in mid-October while the rest of the lipsticks will hit stores in January 2025. And should you want to expand into eyeliners, powders, and more, the brand is offering a sneak peak into their future releases, all slated for next year.

Homme Plissé Issey Miyake’s Arty Partnership

Alerting all Pleats lovers, you’ll want to get your hands on this drop. Homme Plissé Issey Miyake worked with designer/artist Ronan Bouroullec for their fall 2024 collection and now the pieces are starting to trickle into stores. Known as a Creative Session, versus just a simple collaboration, the styles take inspiration from Bouroullec’s drawings and celebrate movement and the human form. Fans of the brand will note that this isn’t the first time the two have worked together — the artist designed the interior of the A-POC store along with his brother in Paris in 2000. Expect to see more pieces hit retail as the season progresses.

Maisie Wilen’s Custom Tour des Frances Femmes Kits

It’s been a good year for women’s sports, from the record setting viewership for the Women’s World Cup to the surge in popularity for the WNBA. And it doesn’t stop there with the Tour des Frances Femmes slated for August 12-18. In honor of that, womenswear label Maisie Wilen will be designing kits for cyclists racing under the Human Powered Health team. The vibrant new uniforms feature a fish scale-inspired pattern and were the result of the creative partnership between Maisie Wilen’s founder Maisie Schloss, and Human Powered Health’s Chief Creative Officer, Sam Wiebe. The striking design can also be seen on a painted racing bike by Factor Bikes, available for purchase alongside the racing kits on pactimo.com next month. Who says you can’t look stylish while riding a bike?

Balenciaga’s Newest Sneakers Are Surprisingly Simple

No one does a more unique designer sneaker than Balenciaga. But their latest style, the Circuit, is more pared back — at least by the brand’s standards. The name, which brings to mind a continuous loop of athletic activity, also reflects the dynamic motion implied by the shoe’s design. Featuring a sole that offers support while in motion as well as aerodynamic vented panels, the lightweight kicks are functional and stylish. In sleek silver and white, the Circuit is a minimalist alternative to the chunkier styles that have become synonymous with Balenciaga. To emphasize the simplicity, Chris Lensz shoots a series of portraits featuring models Annabelle and Khadim. Seated against a plain wall or while clutching a coffee cup, the images highlight just how normal these sneakers are — normcore at its finest.

Louis Vuitton’s Fall Capsule is Equal Parts Refined and Relaxed

Didn’t get your hands on the Louis Vuitton x Timberland drop? Well, another Pharrell Williams designed capsule collection is headed your way this September. Unlike the one earlier this summer, which focused on workwear, this line leans into Williams’ dandy side with a touch of weekend casual as well. Also of note: this collection incorporates the work of the late South Korean painter Park Seo-Bo, an artist known for his minimalist yet graphic lines. Expect everything from sleek cashmere overcoats to leather bombers to track suits to tailoring. Epi, the signature leather that’s inspired by the rippling of wheat fields, is reinterpreted as a textural add-on that can be seen on everything from outerwear to tops. Another LV mainstain, the monogram flower, is added onto a denim suit or as a windbreaker detail. And finally, the LV Blason, which features the LV letters scattered across clothing and accessories, can be found embroidered on a raw-denim suit as well on a lambskin overshirt. For fan’s of Park’s work, they will want to check out the velvet tracksuit, which is inspired by his No.960728 piece or a neon green top which is adapted from No. 30-22 (19/30). From bags to jewelry to scarves, the capsule is full of little touches inspired by the artist. Plus, those styles will also include special tags in the style of Park’s artist signature.

A Colorful Lab Grown Diamond Collection to Know

Mazarin might not be a well known name but the French jewelry brand has amassed a following for their elegant pieces. Founded by Louise de Rothschild and Keagan Ramsamy, who met when they joined the Pierre Bergé & Associés auction house, the label takes its name from Cardinal Mazarin, a great lover of art and godfather and later chief minister to Louis XIV. Their best seller? A ring inspired by elephant tusks called Eboris Link. Made from recycled 18k gold and accented with lab grown white diamonds, they’ve now expanded to offer colorful options in shades like green, blue, or pink. Shop it here.
