Peter Philips, the creative and image director of Christian Dior Makeup, is always thinking outside the box; when he met the Japanese actress and model Yuko Araki he seized on the opportunity to have a little fun. For 10 USA’s spring issue, the makeup artist and the muse explore J-pop’s enduring influence on beauty by combining classic and contemporary techniques, and a few face gems for good measure.

“I like to blend where the eyeshadow and the blush or highlighter meet, so they transition seamlessly into each other,” Philips explains.

“We have gone through a period of extreme false lashes and lash extensions,” says Philips, who is ready for a mascara revival. “I think the benefit of traditional mascaras—the opportunity to do a bold or delicate application—is getting its recognition back.”
