Frieze is a Great Excuse to Throw a Party

The Whitney, Prada, and SSENSE were all celebrating last week.

Last week Frieze, the popular contemporary art fair that holds exhibitions in London, Los Angeles, and Seoul, made its requisite New York stop. Like in 2022, the four day affair took place at The Shed and featured 68 galleries from around the world spread across three floors. Despite being smaller in scale compared to its years at Randall’s Island, the mix of new and old booths highlighted Chelsea stalwarts like David Zwirner and Gagosian as well as newcomers like Neue Alte Brücke from Frankfurt, Germany, and Derosia, a downtown New York City upstart.

While the actual art fair may only be four days, there were a slew of events to cater to the art crowd that flocks to the city. From the Whitney Museum’s coveted Studio Party to Prada x Frieze’s Possible Conversations to the J.W. Anderson and SSENSE late night bash, here’s what you missed.

The Whitney Museum Kicked Things Off

With guests like artist Glenn Ligon and actor Rowan Blanchard (one of the event’s co hosts!) The Whitney’s Studio Party is always a highlight of Frieze. CeeLo Green made a surprise performance alongside a DJ set from The Dare who was playing his set from a humorously large paint can. After a few martinis many wandered up to check out some art, particularly Josh Cline’s Project for a New American Century, which most people seemed to be stealing away to.

RTA Got Surreal

RTA, the multidisciplinary art collective, joined forces with Frieze in kicking off the week with a mesmerizing show by performance artist Sigrid Lauren. Lauren’s original performance brought together choreography, sound and high fashion which drew a model and musician heavy crowd like Jazzelle a.k.a Uglyworld and Eartheater.

Prada’s Possible Conversations Makes Its Return

While technically not a party, Prada held their fourth iteration of Possible Conversations, their series of talks about fashion, culture and life. Held at their downtown Broadway location, The Intersection of Video and Art highlighted the works of artists Dara Birnbaum, Tony Cokes and Ming Wong.

J.W. Anderson and SSENSE’s Late Night Bash

To celebrate J.W. Anderson’s Bumper Hike sneaker collection, the designer partnered up with SSENSE to throw a party at the classic East Village dive bar Boiler Room. Guests like Jemima Kirke and Zachary Quinto were among the many who took over the dance floor courtesy of DJ sets by Fashion LaBeija and Word of Command.
