A star studded campaign plus a special collection? We’re spoiled.
Fun fact that most people don’t know: Loewe is the second oldest luxury fashion house. The Spanish-based brand that calls Madrid home was established in 1846 and celebrates its 180th anniversary this year. Such a milestone is a remarkable feat, especially when you consider that the label was founded not by a singular individual but instead, a collective of artisans. What started as a humble workshop on a cobblestone street has now become a worldwide force, dictating fashion through a unique lens, regardless of the creative director at the helm. At its core, you’ll find a devotion to craftsmanship that’s literally built into its DNA with a focus on creating excellent leather while still retaining a sense of playfulness.
So, how do you celebrate nearly two centuries? First, stack a campaign with stars. Shot by Talia Chetrit, you’ll find the likes of global brand ambassadors Julia Garner and Giselle of Aespa alongside brand ambassadors Salma Abu Deif and Kara Wai. Plus, with Loewe there are always surprises, like the inclusion of actor Sissy Spacek and artist Kara Walker. Throughout the images you’ll find some familiar handbags like the Flamenco clutch, which launched in the 1980s as well as the now iconic Puzzle which came about in 2015. The Amazona 180, a 1975 design reimagined by current creative directors Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez also makes an appearance.
And because it would not be complete without something new, there’s also an anniversary capsule collection, launching today, that spans playful graphic tees, whimsical bag charms, and of course: some new handbags. The connecting motif? A lion, which means lion in German, and refers to Enrique Loewe Roessberg, one of the original founding members who united the collective of artisans and lent his name to the brand. You’ll find the creature rendered in beaded embroidery, leather intarsia and also on the interior of the Amazona 180.
Given that there’s 180 years of history to share, Loewe also has an animated film narrated by Antonio Banderas that highlights key moments. From 1872, the moment when Loewe was formally given its name to 1905, when it was named as a supplier to the Spanish crown to the establishment of its namesake foundation in 1988, it’s a reminder that this brand existed before most modern day inventions. And finally, there will be a special publication, 180 Years of Craft, that’ll be released as a part of Loewe Magazine’s 11th issue. You’ll find them at the brand’s stores as well as partner bookstores starting on June 15. Inside will be images and features that draw from the archives as well as glimpses into the atelier. The best part? It’s free.
