Their new makeup line will be overseen by legendary makeup artist Pat McGrath.
Head into Louis Vuitton, and you can spend hours browsing through their array of ready-to-wear and accessories. You may even find yourself poking about their homewares or perfumes but an elegant lipstick or mascara? That seemed like a fantasy — until today. The brand announced La Beauté Louis Vuitton, its first foray into beauty. At the helm is none other than legendary makeup artist Pat McGrath, who has been the mastermind behind the brand’s beauty looks for over two decades.
The move isn’t quite a surprise as the line between luxury fashion houses have made moves to expand beyond ready-to-wear and accessories, with the likes of Celine and Jacquemus announcing their own respective color collections. And for Louis Vuitton, a part of their history includes beauty. Since its founding in 1854, the brand has gone from creating travel trunks to crafting vanity cases to even venturing into powder compacts, brushes, and mirrors in the 1920s. Two great examples from 1925 include Le Milano, a kit designed for opera singer Marthe Chenal, as well as a lavish toiletry for Polish composer Jan Paderewski. Additionally, the first handbags were for women who needed to carry their everyday items, which, of course, included makeup.
“Working backstage for over 20 years at Louis Vuitton fashion shows, I am thrilled to now play such a key role in the launch of La Beauté Louis Vuitton, which is the result of extraordinary craftsmanship, creativity, and innovation. The beauty universe is about so much more,” McGrath says via the press release. Set to hit stores late this year, she told Vogue that the line will have 55 lipsticks, 10 tinted lip balms, and eyeshadows in addition to lipstick cases and mini trunks. No word on what the colors will exactly be, but given that anything McGrath does is nothing less than impeccable, expect it to be an instant hit.
