At the Ocean Literacy World Conference, Prada Strives For Change

It’s a continuation of their Sea Beyond initiative.

In a time where the climate crisis is rife and action is necessary, you might be thinking about how brands are playing their part in helping to battle it. For Prada, it’s teaming with UNESCO courtesy of their Sea Beyond initiative, which aims to educate future generations about ocean wellbeing and conservation. In line with that work, on June 7th and 8th, just before World Oceans Day, Venice hosted the inaugural Ocean Literacy World Conference, marking the first United Nations event dedicated to the topic. This conference, a collaborative effort between the Prada Group and UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission, marks a pivotal moment in their joint mission.

Consider the Venice event representative of the Prada Group and UNESCO ongoing efforts, like last month’s Possible Conservation, which saw the groups discussing the power of creativity within ocean conservation. The conference saw participation from 131 delegates representing UNESCO Member States, along with ocean literacy experts from across the globe. Together, they crafted the Venice Declaration for Ocean Literacy, a ten-point document providing actionable recommendations to improve the relationship between humans and the ocean. This declaration will be presented to UN Member States on July 2nd in New York, in anticipation of the UN Ocean Conference in Nice, scheduled for June 2025.

Also during the conference came a number of announcements such as the new partnership between Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli and UNESCO. Together, they aim to spread the message of ocean conservation to a global audience during the 37th America’s Cup, using the competition to feature the UNESCO and SEA BEYOND logos on Luna Rossa’s sails. Alongside this brand new collaboration, came the introduction of The Sea Beyond Ideas Box, from the mind of Phillipe Starck. The Ideas Box, mobile multimedia center, aims to provide educational resources to children and young people in vulnerable communities. The center will include internet access, tablets, laptops, and over 250 books and games, along with various training materials. These Ideas Boxes are currently available for use in metropolitan France, overseas regions, Burundi, and the Ivory Coast.
