Last night, the biggest stars in Hollywood threw on their finest togs and headed down to the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles for the 95th annual Academy Awards. The glitziest night in film always delivers on the fashion front, and last night’s red carpet (it was actually a delightful champagne hue this year) didn’t disappoint. From fancy frocks to baby bumps, here are the 10 biggest takeaways.
1. Rihanna + with child = red carpet magic
Rihanna’s pregnancy style is unmatched. After wearing an Alaïa cape for her Superbowl halftime show, the megastar and business mogul – who was nominated for Best Original Song for “Life Me Up” from the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever soundtrack – turned to Pieter Mulier once more. This time, the designer envisioned a chocolate brown leather frock with slashed detailing down the leg and a harness top that cradled her baby bump. A total knockout.
2. Princess frocks aren’t going anywhere
Look at all that froth! What would an Oscars red carpet be without a bunch of princess dresses thrown into the mix? The Little Mermaid’s Halle Bailey was a vision in a baby blue Dolce & Gabbana frock, while Allison Williams looked terrific in a sugary sweet Giambattista Valli number.
3. …neither is all that shimmer
Big stars need equally shiny outfits. Fan Bingbing returned to the Oscars after not attending the ceremony in a decade wearing a fringed Tony Ward dress. Malala Yousafzai was another highlight of the night, wearing a hooded, silver Ralph Lauren dress and Salma Hayek wore a fiery, glistening Gucci number. Michelle Yeoh, who made history as the first Asian Best Actress award winner, beamed in a crystal white Dior Couture moment.
4. Lady Gaga ain’t got time to waste!
We just know Lady Gaga pays for a Deliveroo Plus subscription. The megastar, who was up for Best Original Song for her Top Gun: Maverick balled “Hold My Hand”, wore a sheer Versace frock that debuted on the runway literally three days ago during the brand’s LA catwalk show. Talk about speedy service!
5. Ludovic’s Ann Demeulemeester was out in force
While we’re speaking of dresses worn straight off the runway, three looks from Ludovic de Saint Sernin’s Ann Demeulemeester debut made it to the Vanity Fair official Oscars afters. Manu Rois, Vittoria Ceretti and Hunter Schafer bared it all in highlights from the sensual outing. All the girls and the guys, they want to be wearing Ann Demeulemeester!
6. Pink ladies unite!
You can’t go wrong with pretty in pink, it’s always a winning formula for a standout red carpet moment. Best Actress nominee Andrea Riseborough wore a delicate floral number by Alexander McQueen, while Best Supporting Actress Hong Chau chose an elegant Prada column dress with a black feathered train.
7. The gents came suited and booted
Didn’t the lads look dapper? Highlight tailoring moments from the night included Andrew Garfield in Fendi, Michael B. Jordan in Louis Vuitton, and Best Actor nominee, Paul Mescal, in Gucci.
8. …and sometimes without a shirt!
The best suit menswear moment of the night came courtesy of Riz Ahmed, who chose a slender Prada suit from the brand’s AW23 collection, worn bare-chested with a detachable pointy collar. Superb stuff.
9. Archival frocks galore
The red carpet trend of stars (and their clever stylists) digging into brands’ archives for killer frocks from yesteryear continues. Vanessa Hudgens wore vintage Chanel, Rooney Mara donned vintage Alexander McQueen and Winnie Harlow looked radiant in an archival Giorgio Armani Privé moment.
10. If you’re sat behind Tems, swap seats!
Globally adored songstress Tems had one of the most elegant looks of the night, courtesy of Lever Couture, which saw a tulle hood blossom over the star’s head. Fab for the red carpet, not so much for the poor person stuck behind the towering frock throughout the whole award ceremony.
