Ayo Edebiri in Balenciaga, Taylor Russell in Loewe, and Paul Mescal in Gucci were among our favorites.
Smack dab during the middle of London Fashion Week are the BAFTA awards, which took place earlier tonight. As far as red carpets go, this might be our favorite of the award season bunch — being across the Atlantic seems to be inspiring the celebrities to push the boundaries. Instead of the expected glitzy gowns, which are perfectly lovely but safe, the stars decided to go for unexpected designers and silhouettes. Case in point Taylor Russell in a custom Loewe white gown with feather trim that brought to mind a modern day Josephine Baker. Another hit? Ayo Edebiri, who has been having an incredible run with surprising choices. After her sculptural black Louis Vuitton number at the Emmys and the elegant red Prada dress at the Golden Globes, she turned up in a custom Bottega Veneta look peach gown topped off with a feathery coat and gloves.
Speaking of surprises, Da’vine Joy Randolph also made it to our list, courtesy of her Robert Wun couture gown. While Randolph has been winning trophies all season in beautiful dresses, her choice of designer reflects a keen understanding that while in London, a British designer will win over the crowd every time. Perhaps one of the more unusual looks was on Emma Corrin, who turned up in a crop top with sheer shirt by Miu Miu. With large bows at the hips and bright blue tights, the ensemble is a refreshing take on evening dressing that only they can pull off.
While the likes of Emma Stone, Cate Blanchett, and Naomi Campbell are decidedly not surprises on a best dressed list, the three all made memorable appearances. Stone and Blanchett both opted for Louis Vuitton, with the former in a one-shouldered peach dress that nodded towards her character’s signature giant sleeves in Poor Things. It proved to be a lucky dress since she took home the Best Actress award. Blanchett’s red column with a metal harness was edgier than normal for the usually elegant actress but that’s what made it worthy of the list. Campbell chose a black Chanel hooded chiffon gown and slinked across the red carpet, proving yet again why she’s a supermodel.
And finally the men were no slouch either. Colman Domingo has been having a spectacular run this season and he looks like he’s having a blast while doing so. For the BAFTAs he wore a wide-legged BOSS suit with a floppy tie and cummerbund that had retro flair. Paul Mescal, in Gucci, along with his All of Us Stranger co-star Andrew Scott round out the list, making suiting look far from boring.
