Margot Robbie in Giorgio Armani, Greta Lee in Loewe, and Ayo Edebiri in Prada were among our favorites.
Award season is back and kicking off with the 2024 Golden Globes. Despite the show’s rocky history, the 81st edition featured a red carpet full of gowns that were equal parts good and bad, making it easy to tally up a best dressed list. With the likes of Prada, Gucci, and Giorgio Armani all making strong showings, it’s a hopeful sign that the next few weeks are going to be filled with plenty of looks to admire. With a night full of firsts (Ali Wong and Steven Yeun for Beef! Lily Gladstone for Killers of the Flower Moon!), the most memeable moment happened before the evening began: A woman behind the camera booth whose unstoppable scream at the celebrities made her the most hated woman on the internet in the first week of 2024.
Joys, tears, cheers and regrets filled up the Beverly Hills Hilton. Some attendees looked like they were kidnapped by the dress, while some killed the red carpet effortlessly with an off-season Dior 2019 couture dress. Yes, we’re talking Rosamund Pike and her witty Philip Treacy addition, which served to conceal the post-surgery face after a skiing accident two weeks prior.
Also on our top ten list? Members of the Barbie cast. Margot Robbie showed up in another look that referenced a vintage doll, namely the 1977 Superstar Barbie. The new version, made by Giorgio Armani, was an exact match but still managed to surprise us with an elevated elegance. Mermaid Barbie, Dua Lipa, who went into the Tiffany & Co.’s archive and stepped out with a 1962 necklace worn with a custom Schiaparelli whose flared hemline nodded to her character’s tail.
Prada had strong contenders, with Hunter Schefer in her custom gown based on the spring 2024 runway show that caught the breeze perfectly, creating an ethereal moment. Also in the brand was Ayo Edebiri, who didn’t simply walk the red carpet, she brought her own courtesy of the striking train. A fitting start to a night when she wound up picking up an award. To round out the top women, we loved Greta Lee in Loewe and Taylor Swift in custom Gucci, the two examples of sophistication in womanhood.
The boys did not disappoint either. Between Timothee Chalamet in Celine, Charles Melton in Giorgio Armani and Colman Domingo in Louis Vuitton, menswear is holding its own among a sea of gowns.
