Chanel’s Métiers d’art Collection Ads Are a Colorful Ode to Tweed

Mikael Johnson gives the classic fabric a youthful energy.

Manchester, home to Joy Division, New Order, and The Smiths, was the location for Chanel’s pre-fall show last December, and today, the brand released the accompanying ad campaign. The images stay true to the musical inspiration, with a vibrant yet slightly mischievous take on their classic tweed pieces. Photographer Mikael Jansson created a series of juxtaposing photographs using simple and chic black-and-white images paired with colorful hues of bright red, green, and oranges. Featuring the likes of Lulu Tenney, Loli-Bahia, and Alaato Jazyper, they’re the quintessential chic Chanel girls clad in colorful  jackets accented with Lemarié camellias and Maison Michel tweed caps. Pieces to note include an apple-green jacket that feature braids and croquet trim by flou specialist Paloma, naturally paired with Chanel’s 11.12 bag while another orange piece is worn with a matching handbag. The playful quality makes us all want to be kitted in the same monochromatic fashion.

To accompany the images the brand also tapped brother sister director duo Roman and Sofia Coppola for a short film documenting the show. Both, having worked with the brand on numerous occasions, knew how to combine their sensibilities with Chanel’s signature aesthetic.  The film almost reads like a music video filled with clips of models storming the runway coupled with collages of backstage moments set to New Order’s Blue Monday.  Through the film, the vibrant yet classic energy that Creative Director Virginie Viard wanted to convey through this collection really shone. Should you want to experience the pieces yourself, the Chanel Métiers d’art Collection is in stores starting on May 31st.
