For Prada Group, Sports Are a Chance to Advocate For Ocean Conservation

Along with UNESCO and Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli, they created an interactive exhibit during the America’s Cup final in Barcelona. 

Ocean conservation and literacy have become a huge part of Prada Groups’ corporate social responsibility efforts. From creating Re-Nylon, a line of recycled nylon that actively incorporates plastic waste to Sea Beyond, their educational program to events spanning talks in New York as well conferences in Venice during World Oceans Day, sustainability has become a huge part of their core beliefs. The latest to their work? Earlier this month UNESCO, the Prada Group, and Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli came together for the latest edition of the Ocean&Climate Village in Barcelona. Nestled at the iconic Port Olímpic during the final stages of the 37th America’s Cup, this interactive exhibit was filled with hands-on educational opportunities for anyone passionate about the ocean and its crucial role in climate regulation. 

UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay dropped by the exhibition, commending the Luna Rossa Women’s and Youth teams for their recent wins. Joined by Lorenzo Bertelli, Prada Group’s Head of Corporate Social Responsibility, and Max Sirena, Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli Team Director, Azoulay underscored the importance of ocean protection and praised the initiative for bringing awareness to the relationship between the ocean and our climate.

Alongside hands-on experiences, the Ocean&Climate Village exhibition also offered a mix of infographics, photography, and interactive virtual reality. Visitors were invited to dive into a deeper understanding of how the ocean influences our planet’s climate. Experts from UNESCO’s IOC were on-site, hosting 500 educational workshops to explore this vital connection. Additionally, aboard the restored Cassiopea, a vintage sailing vessel transformed into a sustainable research ship, visitors witnessed firsthand how marine scientific research is conducted in a climate-conscious manner.

A key highlight of this initiative is its role in promoting sustainability within maritime sports. This special edition of the traveling exhibition was a part of the ongoing collaboration between UNESCO and Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli, and emphasized how the world of sailing can contribute valuable scientific data to marine research. They’re collecting valuable data to help understand and protect our oceans, and that’s something we can all cheer for. The exhibit is also part of the Sea Beyond program, which has already inspired over 200 schools in 56 countries to join the mission for ocean conservation.

Lorenzo Bertelli expressed his excitement, saying, “These are great days for sport and the conservation of our ocean.”. As he and his collaborators welcomed the public to the Ocean&Climate Village, it’s clear that this initiative goes beyond just raising awareness – it’s a call to action for both ocean protection and the future of maritime sports.
