Prada Gives Wool and Cashmere a Second Life

The brand’s latest sustainability initiative is tackling natural fibers.

In 2019 Prada launched Re-Nylon, a project that turned pre- and post-consumer nylon waste into new, highly desirable collections. The process was pretty clever: take ocean plastics, fishing nets, and textile excess and transform everything into high-quality secondary raw materials that go straight back into the production process. Over the years this has resulted in everything from handbags to coats and more, all featuring recycled components. Now, the program has expanded to include two new add-ons: Re-Cashmere and Re-Wool. Like the names imply, these collections utilize upcycled wool and cashmere, sourced from pre-consumer offcuts, spinning residues, and cutting room remainders — essentially reimagining scraps destined for the landfill by giving them new life in your closet.

These initiatives are a big part of the goal the Prada Group set in 2023 to move toward lower-impact options, with traceability being at the center of the projects. Every piece from these collections carries an NFC tag that opens the Aura Consortium platform, where customers can follow their garment’s journey. You’re able to trace everything from where the fibers originated to which suppliers handled pieces to what country processed them. The platform also provides a Digital Certificate of Authenticity, secured by blockchain so it can’t be altered.

As for the story behind the two additions, Re-Cashmere begins with exceptional cashmere. Some are collected at Prada’s own Torgiano facility while others are excess textile waste from spinning residues. Once gathered, they’re sorted by color, to avoid re-dyeing, then carded and refined into new yarn. The entire process happens in Italy and the incoming cashmere is certified by the Sustainable Fibre Alliance, which ensures responsible, traceable sourcing. Re-Wool draws on wool and cashmere fabrics from across the Prada Group’s lines, including defective cloth and cutting-room remainders. The yarn is a blend: 50% virgin wool certified to the Responsible Wool Standard, 40% recycled wool and 10% recycled cashmere, both GRS certified.

The result? A wardrobe of everyday elegance for men and women, built around layering. These are garments meant to be worn season after season rather than to make a statement, while embodying the unmistakable Prada look. With this, Prada proves that circularity and quality aren’t opposing principles but complementary ones.
