THE NEW MAKERS: ELLEN HARROLD

Meet the comedian who rises in the LA scene.

It’s a tough time to be a rebel. There’s not a lot we haven’t seen, and anything we might wish to see, or dream up, is less than a click away. What’s an iconoclast to do? Making something is a good start. Real things, not just content, can exist in the world, turning heads and changing minds. These 10 creatives—all in Chanel Fine Jewelry for this portfolio—might not have permanent solutions, but they are just getting going. What they’ve accomplished so far sets them apart and raises the bar for what’s next.

Ellen wears Première Iconic Chain Double Row watch in steel coated in yellow gold with black leather and black-lacquered dial by CHANEL Watches, Coco Crush quilted motif hoops in 18k yellow gold, Talismans medal reversible design necklace in 18k yellow gold with diamonds, Eternal N°5 diamond line necklace in 18k yellow gold with diamonds, Coco Crush Toi et Moi quilted motif ring in 18k white and beige gold with diamonds, Coco Crush quilted motif rings in 18k yellow gold and white gold and Coco Crush bracelets in 18k beige gold and yellow gold by CHANEL Fine Jewelry

“Being a stand-up comedian, you have to find these little hacks in order to be a well-rounded, healthy person,” says Ellen Harrold. It’s easier for her than most; her day job is teaching classes at a fitness studio near her home in Los Angeles. An avid surfer who practices yoga, she was certified at 18 while growing up near Atlantic City. In 2024, Harrold applied that athleticism to a bit that went viral: a TikTok video of her doing an impression of a “cool girl” giving a tour of her bedroom, including hopping onto a surfboard against the wall, has 24 million views and counting. But Harrold cut her teeth the old-fashioned way: hitting as many open mics as possible while working as a live-in nanny in New York. What began as a dare—she and a colleague agreed to try an open mic while she was a marketing intern at Salesforce—has become a career: She recently taped her first special, does spots all over the country, and hosts Abbott Kidding, a popular weekly show in LA, while writing fiction on the side. “There are so many things that I had to unlearn,” she says. “In New York, I was doing comedy with a bunch of dudes who were like, ‘This is how you have to write a joke.’” It served her to a point, but distracted her from what she could offer. “The thing that people respond to the most is me being myself. So what a treat that that feels fucking good.”
