For their SS27 collection, Dolce & Gabbana imagined the contents of a wardrobe in a grand Sicilian house. Inside were treasures belonging to multiple generations: a great grandmother’s hand-made trousseau, bodices from a bygone era, a grandmother’s bejewelled jacket or party dress, a mother’s collection of antique lace curtains. What if the daughter got her hand on all this inherited finery and put it together with her own 21st century pieces? That was the premise for their Stavaganza Siciliana show which saw the designers mix eras and items with eccentric abandon and their signature maximalist verve.
A classic tweed four pocket jacket was paired with 19th century bloomers, a sheer beaded flapper dress was worn over a black bra and knickers, bejewelled jeans were worn with an antique lace jacket, a pencil skirt was fashioned from a crochet fringed throw. The eccentric dressing-up box combinations kept coming: gingham rompers with riding boots, a gilded leopard print opera coat over baggy jeans.
It was playful and full of fun, as the designers remixed their classics, scrabbling their vocabulary to create something fresh and something that payed homage to the Sicilian style that is at the root of everything they do. The message? Revel in the joy of dressing up.
