Big Bang Unico Magic City is inspired by the city’s sunset.
During the first week of December, Miami swells as the art, fashion, and creative-loving crowds descend upon the city. Between Art Basel, Design Miami, and all of the other satellite fairs, the place transforms into a colorful, vibrant destination with activations, cocktails, dinners, and parties throughout the day and night. And for Hublot, that’s precisely why they’re an enthusiastic participant, year after year. The luxury watchmaker might call Switzerland home but in the United States, they’re actually based in Miami. It’s fitting then that in honor of this year’s festivities they launched a new watch, the Big Bang Unico Magic City, dedicated to the place that’s a home away from home.
The watch takes its name from Miami’s nickname as the Magic City, a place where you’d find vibrant nightlife, beaches, and rich culture. Inspired by the city’s vivid sunsets as well as the Art Deco movement and the city’s 80s new wave-renaissance, the dial features an ombre purple pink wash of color in addition to a palm tree detail. Internally, the timepiece is made with Hublot’s in-house Unico HUB1280 movement. With a 72-hour power reserve, the movement has an open heart, so you can see its skeletonized design. And because this is a place where you might find yourself taking a dip at any moment, it’s water resistant up to 100m, so you can swim and sun as you wish. To finish off, there are two straps, a classic black rubber option ot a vivid blue and pink calf strap, to play off the dial.
With only 35 pieces, the limited edition design can only be found in the brand’s two Miami boutiques in the Design District and Bal Harbour, in addition to online. “This extraordinary [piece] is a celebration of [the city’s] pulsating rhythm and serves as a testament to Hublot’s commitment to crafting unique timepieces that reflect the spirit of the exciting locales they draw inspiration from,” says Ricardo Guadalupe, the brand’s CEO, via the press release.
To celebrate the big unveiling the brand hosted a dinner at Queen, a Japanese restaurant and lounge, in the heart of South Beach last week. As the room lit up in shades of pink and purple and M83 blasted, the watch was introduced to a cheering crowd of fans, many of them longtime collectors of the brand. Following the meal, a silk aerialist spun across the high ceilings, kicking off the party portion of the evening – a fitting way to celebrate a magic watch in a magic city.
