The two brands received top honors for their history of craftsmanship in the scents world.
Last night, the annual Fragrance Foundation Awards took place at New York’s Lincoln Center. Better known as the Oscars of the perfume world, the ceremony featured over 1,000 guests with the likes of Christie Brinkley, Nina Garcia, Julianna Margulies, Anna Sui, and Chase Sui Wonders among the attendees and presenters. Two of the big honors of the night? Louis Vuitton and Guerlain took home lifetime achievement and Perfume Extraordinaire trophies, respectively.
Jacques Cavallier Belletrud, a master perfumer with a 45-year-long career in the industry, was born into the role. As the grandson and son of perfumers from Grasse, he began his career as a creator and Innovation Director, working for 22 years at Firmenich, the Swiss fragrance company. Some of his signature creations include memorable scents like Jean-Paul Gaultier’s Classique, L’eau D’Issey by Issey Miyake, Nina by Nina Ricci, and Yves Saint Laurent’s Opium pour Homme, to name a few. Since 2016, he has worked with Louis Vuitton, creating fragrances like Ombre Nomande Attrape Rêves and Imagination. Most notably, he also helped rebuild Les Fontaines Parfumées, an estate that serves as the base of LV’s scent innovation.
In addition to Louis Vuitton, Maison Guerlain, who has been around since 1828, received the “Perfume Extraordinaire” Award for Tobacco Honey. Delphine Jelk, Guerlain’s Perfumer and Creative Director, says, “I have wanted to combine honey and tobacco for a long time. They are contrasting materials but create a beautiful work of art.” Other notable wins include Gilles Andrier, CEO of Givaudan, who took home the prestigious Hall of Fame Award, while Hermès Un Jardin à Cythère Eau de Toilette and Burberry Goddess were among the fragrances honored.
