There was an anxious air to the Noir Kei Ninomiya show Saturday afternoon. Musicians Hakushi Hasegawa and Tokutaro Hosoi provided a menacing soundtrack as the designer’s structural wonders sauntered down the catwalk. Models came with sculptural, braided hairpieces that concealed their faces, some of which were adorned with miniature fighting bears and wolves, also made from hair. Ninomiya’s imagination knows no limits and this season saw his designs take on brilliant, new outlandish forms. Bulbous, caged frocks looked like they were built from ninja stars, or blossomed into cocooning capes made from plastic carved into flowers. More cages sprouted with cartoonish florals that swayed as the models walked. One blood red dress resembled a ghoulish cloud like something from a horror film.
What’s great about Ninomiya is his ability to balance his avant-garde showstoppers with seriously wearable designs. Amongst the best bits were frothy black dresses that collaged draped mesh with Arran knit vests. Elsewhere, there were leather jackets littered with eyelets and elongated bomber jackets that’ll undoubtedly be snatched up by the brand’s loyal fanbase.
