The new collection includes the introduction of vibrant colorful pieces.
Sustainability has always been a core pillar for Prada Group, you only need to look to their longstanding commitment with UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) as proof. From hosting talks to creating educational opportunities via their SEA BEYOND program, they’ve found creative ways to educate and empower the next generation to be better stewards of the oceans. Among their efforts is their Re-Nylon initiative, which is in its eighth year. Today their newest collection releases along with the accompanying campaign and documentary series starring brand ambassadors Benedict Cumberbatch and Letitia Wright. In conjunction with National Geographic CreativeWorks, the two short films follow the actors as they explore the real-world impact of the SEA BEYOND across the globe. From Oahu, Hawai’i to Japan’s Izu peninsula and the city of Kamakura, the videos enable the viewer to travel the world.
The first film sees Cumberbatch meeting with Elisabetta Zavoli, a photojournalist, award-winning documentary photographer to explore the waters around the Izu peninsula. Just two hours from Tokyo, this part of the ocean has a uniquely rich and dynamic underwater environment due to powerful ocean currents and diverse geology. Zavoli learns about the work of Sakana-kun, renowned Japanese ichthyologist, professor, and artist whose program is supported by SEA BEYOND. As part of this project, the Sakana-kun Exploration Team enables elementary school children to build a meaningful relationship with the ocean, defined by care, education, empathy and action. The second, starring Wright, will follow later.
Notably in the videos and images are pieces from the latest Prada Re-Nylon collection. In 2019, the brand shifted from using virgin nylon to a new fabrication. Produced from the recycling and purification of plastic collected worldwide from landfills and textile waste via a process of depolymerization and re-polymerization, the creations have a neutral impact on the ocean while retaining the design details inherent to the brand. New this season is the use of color. A mix of hopeful, bright hues from canary yellow to sky blue to grass green to orange accentuate the practicality and ease of the garments. You’ll find lightweight jackets, bucket hats, backpacks and pouches — joyful styles for the outdoors adventurer as well as the urban professional. As of July 2023, 1% of the proceeds of the Prada Re-Nylon for SEA BEYOND Collection go towards SEA BEYOND. Shop it here.
