The pro surfer talks surfing, risk taking, and watch memories ahead of the brand’s latest launch.
Adventure is taking center stage with the launch of the new 2026 Tag Heuer Aquaracer Professional 100 Solargraph and Professional 200 Solargraph collections. Unveiled in La Chaux-de-Fonds on May 25th, these new watches celebrate the brand’s enduring connection to athletes and explorers who push boundaries and thrive in the world’s most intense environments. Few embody that spirit more than Kai Lenny, the 33 year old big wave surfer based in Hawaii, who we were lucky enough to sit down with.
For Lenny, whose life revolves around chasing some of the world’s most dangerous waves, performance and resilience are non-negotiables. Speaking about his idea of a ‘perfect day’, the surfer painted a beautiful picture of life at Pe’ahi, Maui, appropriately nicknamed ‘Jaws’, where 50-foot waves crash onto the reef.
“A perfect day,” he says, “is a culmination of a lot of preparation days to this one big moment where we get a giant swell somewhere.” He describes waking at 4am, trying to eat as much breakfast as possible, heading to the harbour with his team, and preparing for what becomes “a 12-hour day of just full tilt.” Yet beneath the adrenaline lies vulnerability. “There’s a lot of anxiety, a lot of nerves,” he admits. “You see these giant waves break and think, ‘How did I get myself into this position?’”
That relentless pursuit of pushing the body’s limits is precisely the philosophy behind the new Aquaracer Solargraph collection. Originally rooted in the Heuer Reference 844 launched in 1978, the Aquaracer line has evolved into one of Tag Heuer’s defining outdoor watches, blending durability and luxury. The new 2026 collection introduces refined case geometries, elevated materials and the brand’s pioneering Solargraph movement, which harnesses both natural and artificial light for energy.
The Aquaracer Professional 100 Solargraph offers a more elegant option with a new 28mm case, available in black, blue, and mother-of-pearl variations, with diamond hour markers. Meanwhile, the Professional 200 Solargraph 40mm embraces a sharper, more technical option, with steel and titanium designed for both rugged exploration and daily wear.
For Lenny, the partnership feels deeply personal. “My father always had TAG Heuer watches,” he recalls, referencing childhood memories of watching Formula One legend Ayrton Senna race with the brand’s logo across his car. “One of my heroes wasn’t even part of the sport I participated in. To be at all similar to someone like that feels uplifting and exciting.”
After more than a decade as an ambassador, Lenny describes himself as “the test dummy” for the Aquaracer. “I get to push the limits of the watch in places you couldn’t simulate. Giant waves, harsh wind conditions, sand,” he says. “I wear it every single day, and it still looks brand new.”
The Solargraph movement’s sustainability credentials also resonate strongly with Lenny, who spends much of his life immersed in nature. “It shouldn’t have to feel like a chore to protect the ocean,” Lenny explains. “The highest-performing things are now becoming the most sustainable.”
As the sun sets after another day surviving massive waves, Lenny says there is always “a sense of gratefulness.” It’s that balance of endurance, innovation and reverence for the natural world that Tag Heuer’s latest Aquaracer collection seeks to capture. Watches designed not only to tell time, but to accompany those bold enough to chase those incredible moments.
